The enchanted tree stump – Finding inspiration in nature

I was just heading out to do more recce for the Taman Jurong project, when it started to pour heavily. Decided to take the time to work on today's Inktober prompt, 'Enchanted'.

During a previous recce trip to the estate, I came across this tree stump. From the girth of the felled tree I could tell it was a big one, perhaps a Mother Tree that had supported the surrounding trees, sending signals and nourishment through the vast root network and fungi. After being cut it still continued supporting life forms (and being supported by the other trees around it) as observed by the rings of mushrooms, ferns and weeds growing out of the stump. It was truly an Enchanting sight, in the middle of a shady area with lots of other trees.

After yesterday's burst of drawings to catch up with Inktober, Jake Parker's reminder to keep it small and simple was timely to stop myself from burning out. As creative people we can be demanding, both of ourselves and others. My creative energy comes in waves with peaks and troughs.

Sometimes when we are lucky we get to meet fellow creatives who share a similar vision and ideal. Coming together to co-create carries with it a certain kind of enchantment too. Taking a little time to reflect on the motives behind our work and why we do what we do, serves as a reminder and reassurance to stay the path. (And this rainy weather is perfect for contemplation!)
